Love Across The Alley: My First Commission

So, remember my little art commission dilemma from yesterday? Well, in a moment of sheer bravery—or possibly caffeine-induced insanity—I decided to accept Robbie’s offer. Yes, folks, I am officially an artist for hire. Who knew? My doodles have gone from the margins of my notebooks to the spotlight of romantic artistry. Someone hand me a beret and a paintbrush, because apparently, I’m living the dream.

Let me tell you, Robbie’s request is both heartwarming and a little daunting. He wants a drawing of him looking lovingly at his girlfriend, Isabelle, through his apartment window, while Isabelle gazes out her own window at a moonlit sky. Romantic, right? Turns out, it’s their anniversary in a few days, and Robbie wants something special to commemorate it. Cue the collective “aww” from everyone. Seriously, this setup is straight out of a Hallmark movie. I half expect doves to fly by and a soft-focus lens to appear out of nowhere.

Now, Robbie and Isabelle live in opposing apartment buildings, with windows that face each other, like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet minus the family feuds—or, you know, the tragic ending. The whole scene sounds like something straight out of a rom-com, and I have to admit, I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff—even if my drawing skills are a little on the potato side of the spectrum. Who knew that my potato-cat doodles would someday lead me to capture such romantic theatrics?

I’ve got to capture the essence of this moment without turning it into a cartoonish disaster. No pressure, right? Just the looming possibility of ruining an anniversary with my version of art. The idea of translating this sweet story into a drawing is both thrilling and terrifying. I’m balancing on the tightrope between artistic ambition and the fear of messing up Robbie’s anniversary gift. It’s like walking a high wire while juggling flaming torches—except the torches are my self-doubt, and the wire is my shaky confidence.

So, armed with my trusty sketchbook and a playlist of sappy love songs (for inspiration, obviously), I’m diving into this project headfirst. I’m determined to make it work—rusty skills and all. Who knows? Maybe this will be the push I need to get back into drawing regularly, and maybe even start taking more commissions. Today, a window scene for lovers. Tomorrow, maybe an art show featuring all my ‘accidental potato’ pieces.

Stay tuned for the final product, dear readers. Let’s hope it turns out more “aww” and less “oops.” If not, at least I’ll have a new story about how I accidentally turned Robbie into a lopsided stick figure.

Stay snarky,

~ Rita 🖤
